Operating Considerations:
Consider intended use of system. If the system is to be used primarily for computationally demanding applications such as simulations or plume modeling, a faster processor and adequate RAM (at least 32GB) are essential, and for video intensive applications care should be taken to select a robust video card. For typical office applications or web browsing, almost any current processor will suffice.
Check processor speeds carefully. Comparison is not linear across differing processor sets, and there are wide performance variations across the same processor family. The proliferation of chip sets and video processors makes it very difficult to find the "latest and greatest" processor set. Web sites such as intel.com and amd.com provide web pages that list and compare their current chip sets. These can be used to supplement the information provided by retailers.
In many cases, RAM is more important than processor speed, as lack of memory can hinder modern large operating systems. Opt for additional RAM if possible.
Dual monitor configurations are becoming the norm for desktop installations. Ensure that the hardware and operating system are capable of supporting dual monitors, and consider procuring an extra monitor for increased effectiveness.
Check the version of operating system delivered with device. Many less expensive desktops are delivered with "Home" versions of operating systems (as opposed to "Professional" versions, which generally offer more robust networking and device control). Check for operating system upgrade options.
