Description:
Radar systems designed to penetrate walls or ground to allow detection of hidden objects.
ImportantFeatures:
Operates in the radio frequency (RF) range, generally MHz - GHz. Systems generally emit RF energy and look for reflections off objects, such as metal objects which are strongly reflecting, or off interfaces between materials / air voids. May detect motion through walls. Wall penetrating radar systems that are millimeter wave-based may have some imaging capability.
Operating Considerations:
Radar systems rely on the operator to interpret signals / low-resolution images, making interpretation challenging. May require extensive training/experience to produce reliable results. Water is absorptive to radio frequency energy, leading to poor penetration into wet surfaces/soil. Signals do not provide material identification (e.g. all metals appear similar).
Training Requirements:
Core Training: Manufacturer's Recommendations
Initial Training: Extensive (> 2 days)
Sustainment Training: Minimal (<1 day)
